There are many different kinds of GRP mouldings available and they are used on all parts of the building. GRP is short for glass-reinforced plastic. A building material that has been with us for many decades. However, at first it was known as fibreglass.
As the name suggests it is a composite material. The main component is threads of plastic that are given additional strength and durability by the adding of glass. These glass fibre threads are mixed with a plastic epoxy paste, such as polyester, vinylester or thermoplastic and spread over a moulding then left to set. Once set is extremely light, yet extremely strong and durable.
Examples of GRP Mouldings
Practically wherever you look you will see GRP mouldings. However, the likelihood is that you will not realise that you are actually looking at one.
GRP can be moulded into practically any shape and given practically any texture or finish. This allows building components, which are traditionally made out of a variety of building products to be reproduced using GRP. A good example of this is door canopy over a front door. If built traditionally the canopy would have a tile or felt roof, which would be set upon a wooden structure. Today you can buy a door canopy that is entirely constructed out of GRP. However, it looks exactly like one that has been built traditionally.
Another example of a GRP moulding most people do not notice is a chimney. A traditionally built chimney is a complex Artisan piece of work. However, a chimney made out of GRP or looks the same as one that has been built traditionally out of a variety of different types of brick or stone.
Buying GRP Mouldings
Unfortunately, GRP mouldings are not that easy to come across on the High Street. By far the best way to shop for them is to do so online. Many manufacturers sell direct via the web, therefore on the web you get a far better choice. If you need something special it is always worth talking to these specialist manufacturers, because, for a price, they may be able to build it for you.
