The trend of the last four decades has been to replace wooden windows with double gazed units as these are seen as maintenance free. This may be a good reason for doing away with wooden windows but the appearance of wooden windows is difficult to replicate.
Sash windows
Sash windows were the prime type of windows prior to double-glazing, unless you had casement windows, that could also be metal. The appearance of casement windows can be replicated with double-glazing but sash windows are far more difficult. Today these windows can be replaced with seasoned timber and will have a lifeline that will stretch over many years. They will not warp, and nor will they rot as they will be treated, and if you so wish, can now be crafted from hardwood.
Listed buildings
There are a significant number of properties that date back over one hundred years that are the subject of listed building status. These buildings will have wooden windows, either sash or casement, and they cannot be replaced by double-glazing, as the listed building status will not allow. A lot of the windows are non-standard sizes as when the houses were built the carpenters were on site and thus they could make windows to any size. These windows can now be replicated to perfection and will look exactly as the originals did when they were first fitted.
Conservatories
Many old mansion homes had hand built wooden conservatories on the rear, or indeed had stand-alone glasshouses that were for plants, and for the ladies of the house to relax in and obtain a little sun. These conservatories have today seen far better days and now need a vast amount of work in order to restore them to their former glory. They need skilled carpenters who can work to exacting standards but with the resurrection of these skills these conservatories can now be built to even higher standards than when originally constructed.
Wooden windows should not always be rejected in favour of modern substitutes as they allow for the character of the house to be retained.
