Types of fireworks
Fireworks are a part of life in the UK and a special one at that. Most people have great memories of Guy Fawkes Night as a child and recreating the magic for your own family is always a special thing. Some people get confused over the many types of fireworks and what they actually do, the names are evocative of the excitement and thrill of the 5th of November but what do they actually mean?
Knowing what exactly it is that different types of fireworks actually do is a good way to ensure that you have a display to rival the most dramatic. Some of the most popular fireworks and what they do are as follows.
” Roman Candles; these are one of the most stunning fireworks, shooting out a host of coloured stars and balls along with loud bangs and flashes.
” Rockets; perhaps the most well known of all fireworks these are a familiar sight with their tail of pretty stars and a dramatic burst at the end.
” Fountains; another well known model, fountains are often conical in shape and are set on the ground to produce dramatic showers of sparkles.
” Catherine wheels; a whirling and twirling circle which when nailed to a post and ignited, produces an exciting roundabout of sparkles.
Fireworks and safe displays
Organising a display of fireworks requires that you pay special attention to safety. Fireworks are explosives and as such need to be treated with extreme caution. The only fireworks that are safe to buy and use are those which display BS7114 on their packaging. This is the British safety standard indicator and if your fireworks do not display this on their packaging then they are not safe as they do not comply with British safety standards.
Fireworks should always be stored in a closed metal box and only one firework should be removed from the box at a time. A torch should be used for reading instructions, never use a naked flame. Keep a bucket of water close at hand in case of accident and always wear gloves and eye protectors.
It is a good idea to read instructions before the night sets in and then you will be familiar with what items you need to hand and also of any preparations which might need to be made before the big night.
