Grooming tips for the Summer months

In recent years, all our good weather seems to have happened in spring. With the bizarre weather we’ve been having lately, no-one can say we’ve already had our summer this year – we must be owed one soon!

In that case, it’s probably about time to start thinking about getting our bods ready for being revealed to the world once again after a very long autumn, winter and spring since their last airing. If your legs (or back, if you’re a man) could be confused with gorillas’ or your feet compared with trolls’ then it’s never going to be too early to get started on some pre-summer grooming!

Think of your body in summer the same way as you think of your house in spring. The different light shows up all the bad bits and everything needs a really good sort out. So start as you would a really good spring-clean of your home: from the top down.

Give your hair a really good condition and make sure that any greys are covered and any roots are touched up properly. Shave your face (if you’re a man) or pluck pesky little hairs if you’re a woman and need to. Facial hair-removal works best if you open your pores a little first – so do it after a shower when the steam has done that job for you or, if you don’t have time, hold a warm flannel to your face for a few seconds. Then make sure your pearly-whites are, well, pearly-white – consider having your teeth whitened professionally if they are very stained, or just use whitening toothpaste for the next few weeks.

Then move on to your neck and chest. For women, this might mean accessorising outfits with brightly-coloured, summery necklaces and buying some new bras to give a bit extra support and uplift (or with straps that won’t show through strappy summer dresses). For the guys, it might mean evaluating the amount of hair and deciding whether to get rid or not! Women have the same decision to make about their legs, though it’s fair to say that whilst a guy can often go through summer with a hairy chest or back (since t-shirts are pretty good at hiding these whilst remaining cool and weather-appropriate) women have a harder time dealing with hairy legs and armpits in public!

If you do have a hair-removal issue to deal with, you could opt for waxing or shaving, though these are short-term and can be messy and painful. They can also leave in-growing hairs that can get infected and not only do they feel uncomfortable they look awful.

Laser hair removal treatments are great because they can cover large areas and permanently reduce the amount of hair on the treated areas. If you get this treatment done now, the job will be done in good time for summer. You may need more than one treatment to get the result you’re after, so now is a good time to book yourself in to one of the specialist laser hair removal clinics (do an online search for ‘laser hair removal, London’ or whichever city is most local to you and you’ll be sure to find somewhere close).

Make sure you protect your skin from the effects of the sun to reduce the chance of developing wrinkles (UVA rays reduce the elasticity of your skin, making it more prone to wrinkles in later life) and to prevent unsightly and painful sunburn.
