The Honda Civic began life as a sub compact car. However, over the years been developed and marketed as a compact car. Throughout that time, it has remained popular in all of the countries it has been marketed. The car has grown with its customers, with each version being slightly bigger and upmarket than the last. A policy that has worked well, some clients have only bought Civics for several decades.
Today’s Honda Civic
Today the Honda Civic fits in at the top end of the compact car market. The first version of the car was released in 1973. Since then there have been nine different versions and numerous specials released.
The latest version was released, in April 2011 in North America and in February 2012 to the European market. On both continents, it got rave reviews.
It was praised for its looks even though it was slightly smaller than its predecessors were. This has kept it lighter, which has helped with fuel economy. Fuel consumption varies across the range, but is much better than it was, and compares favourably with other cars in its class.
The range of engines and transmissions on offer is impressive. In total, there are six engines to choose from and three transmissions. The European market gets the widest choice and the vehicle comes in a range of trim levels. Most vehicles in the range also include Honda’s Eco Assist technology.
The Honda Civic’s Awards
Over the years, the Honda Civic has won numerous awards across the globe. For example, in 2005 the Honda Civic EX was voted International Car of the Year. In 1973, the Civic came third in the European Car of the Year awards. It has also won the US Road Test magazine Car of the Year award, and has been voted the Semperit Irish Car of the Year. Automobile Magazine awarded the Civic the Automobile of the Year title. The Civic has also won awards in South Africa, Japan, Canada and numerous awards in the North American market. In many cases, it was the first time these awards were given out to a vehicle designed and manufactured by a Japanese company. The Civic truly was, and still is a trailblazer.
