How weddings have changed over the years

Weddings have certainly come a long way over the years. These days, they are often a real spectacle and a chance for people to show off in style. Meanwhile, technology is also helping to transform the occasions. A good example of this is the electronic wedding invitations that are now available. By using email wedding invites like this, couples can make their lives easier, save money and help to minimise their carbon footprints.

Those keen to take a look at the way nuptial unions have transformed throughout the decades can head to the South Shields Museum and Art Gallery. According to the Shields Gazette, the centre is staging a new exhibition that looks back at weddings over the last 100 years.

Called Something Old, Something New, it celebrates the magic of these events.

Visitors can take a look at the wedding dresses, gifts, newspaper clippings and photographs of happy couples over the course of the last century. They can also view invitations. These could provide an interesting contrast with the electronic wedding invitations that are now available.

Also on display will be details of high-profile nuptial unions, including those of Prince Charles and Diana and the Beckams.

Commenting on the exhibition, Adam Bell, assistant keeper of social history for Tyne and Wear Museums and Archives, said: “Weddings are something that everyone can relate to. Even if they haven’t been married themselves, most people have attended one. It’s a day that everyone enjoys.

“Looking through our archives, we realised that we had a lot of beautiful wedding dresses, and it would have been a shame to keep them locked away.”

He went on to say that those behind the exhibition expect it to be very popular.

People who have already sent out their email wedding invites or who are about to may be among those planning to visit the South Shields Museum and Art Gallery.
