The Motability scheme is a great scheme that is designed to give people with a disability the ability to be able to buy and run a car. Owning a car enables them to get around and live a full life. It makes it easier for them to find a job and keep it as well as get to medical appointments and stay in touch with friends and family.
The History of the Motability Scheme
Lord Sterling of Plaistow and Lord Goodman launched the Motability scheme at Earl’s Court on 25 July 1978. Initially the scheme was limited to 16-19 year olds, because it was believe that this age group would benefit the most. The main idea was to help this age group to find work. Being able to reliably get to and from work is a major issue if you have no choice but to use public transport.
Banks, garages, car manufactures, wheelchair and scooter manufacturers work together to provide affordable motoring to the disabled. The insurance industry also makes a large contribution.
The scheme is designed to provide transport even for disabled people who cannot drive. For example, if you are blind you can still qualify for a Motability grant meaning that a member of your family can drive you.
To date just over 3 million cars, electric scooters and electric wheelchairs have been bought using funds from the scheme. The scheme has helped the family of the disabled as much as it has the disabled people themselves. The fact that the disabled member of a family has mobility frees up the rest of the family to get on with their lives too. It enables the disabled to play a full and active role in society as well as in family life.
Finding a Motability Deal
The easiest way to find a garage that sells cars under the Motability scheme is to do an online search. Consultants and GPs also often know which local garages are in the scheme. Many charities that help people with specific illnesses or disabilities can also help with finding a new car that is suitable.
